Why is the shape of our chassis hexagonal

This particular shape results from the following requirements

  • our wish for the fastening holes not to be situated too near the enclosure mounting hole edge, first to avoid wood splintering and second to leave enough clearance to position the grip-nuts properly
  • to make the basket design compact enough to fit into little space
  • to enable several drivers to be fitted as close as possible together

The hexagonal shape with its eight ear fastening basket has become part of the PHL AUDIO signature from the very beginning.

Why do we not use a double spider?

All our products have been designed recently - PHL AUDIO was born in 1990 - and integrate a specific technological solution to satisfy the centering requirement. Our design philosophy is to always prefer the simplest and most rational solutions. The solution lies in the size of the spider which has been chosen large enough for its internal stress to be kept well under the elasticity limit when pulled to maximum damage excursion.

Why do our drivers need less load volume than most of their competitors ?

This is a direct consequence of the advantage of their particular design based on the VENTED COMPACT MAGNET SYSTEM® and the INTERCOOLER SYSTEM®. Applied to each PHL AUDIO unit these two systems have enabled us to design high strength magnet systems -for example our 3''magnet system used on the SP5050 is specified at 23.4 N/A for Xmax = ±7.0mm - without reducing maximum linear excursion capability (Xmax) as is usually the case.

Consequently the speaker design requires a slightly higher moving mass - on the SP5050 Mms = 109 gr - to compensate for the high strength magnet system and obtain a good balance between bass frequency extension and sensitivity. As for the design of a suitable Bass-Reflex cabinet, the results show an optimum box volume Vb of 75 liters with a tuning frequency Fb of 43Hz, which represents a volume requirement of 20 to 30% less than a conventional 15'' LF driver with 4'' coil. Such a reduction in internal enclosure volume saves wood and weight...

And thanks to so compact a sound system, storage, shipment volume and weight are saved. And finally time and money are saved for the setting up and taking off of touring sound reinforcement systems. So take the advantage with PHL AUDIO.

What are the differences between Program, Peak, Peak Program, AES, IEC and RMS Power?


Only IEC and AES Power handling capacity are standardized values.

  • IEC Power: the IEC 268-5 Standard (IEC for International Electrotechnical Committee) Second Edition 1989-07 defines the Power Handling Capacity of a loudspeaker as the square of the RMS voltage of the ''weighted simulated programme signal'' that the loudspeaker is able to withstand continuously during 100 hours, divided by its rated impedance value. The manufacturer must specify the load enclosure and/or the cross over characteristics with the results
  • AES Power: The AES2-1984 Standard (AES for Audio Engineering Society) is the most frequently used Standard in Professional Audio and Sound Reinforcement. It is defined as the square of the RMS voltage of a ''defined band-passed pink noise signal'' that the loudspeaker is able to withstand continuously during at least 2 hours, divided by the impedance value at Zmin. While a free-air test is specified in the standard, many manufacturers, like PHL AUDIO, run this test in a load enclosure and specify its characteristics with the results, for more realistic values

The other power types are more fanciful: 

  • RMS Power: The statement of RMS power proceeds from an obvious concern for accuracy but is not standardized. It is usually defined in practice with sinwave signals and may relate to the maximum thermal power that the device can withstand. But neither the frequencies nor the test duration which are of great influence on the results are stated
  • Program Power: Program Power is often stated in the data sheets while not standardized. It is usually defined in practice as twice (+3dB) the powerhandling capacity and generally corresponds to the power amplifier matching value requirement for music programmes
  • Peak Program Power: This program is also used but it is not standardized. It allows to publish very advantageous power values, because it corresponds to the instantaneous peak value which is defined as almost twice (+ 3dB) the program power value !

An example based on our 15" SP5050 is quite revealing of the differences between each designation:

  • Power handling capacity according to IEC 268-5 : 350W
  • Power handling capacity according to AES 2-1984 : 500 W
  • RMS Power : 500 W
  • Program Power : 1000 W
  • Peak Program Power : 2000 W

How is PHL AUDIO involved with ecology?

Our actions have been always inspired by our concern for health and for preservation of the environment. PHL AUDIO's action for ecology is dual.

At the manufacturing plant:

  • manufacturing processes have been selected to minimize energy consumption
  • all our adhesives are solvent-free
  • cone coating is water based and a non health hazard
  • packages are recycled through the RESY network
  • no heavy metals or cadmium are used or contained in our products

On the product design: 

  • all our products are designed according to the policy that long-life duration products are the best way to minimize the production of waste
  • the conception of the design of our products allows for reconing without wasting the whole of the speaker. Only the moving assembly is replaced, and the driver ready to be used again with all its original characteristics recovered.

Our sample policy

Any drivers from the standard range offered by PHL AUDIO can be obtained as samples. This policy does not apply to OEM prototypes. For information on OEM prototype policy, please contact us.

At PHL AUDIO, we realize that a speaker system manufacturer cannot buy every new driver which comes out on the market. At the same time, we want to offer the opportunity to evaluate each PHL AUDIO driver without hesitation. We have, therefore, developed the following Sample Policy.

Our policy on samples is the following

  • 1. Your sample request is in fact a formal commercial order to be issued in writing with a P.O. number.
  • 2. You pay for the drivers according to your regular payment terms.
  • 3. The sample drivers - whether in working or non-working order (see § 4) - can be returned to PHL Audio, freight prepaid, within 10 weeks following original shipment (date of invoice) and are then credited on your customer account (no cash refunds).
  • 4. A driver which is returned in non-working order will be credited to your account on receipt of your test report describing the extreme conditions of use and/or tests of the driver, enabling us to further improve our products.
  • 5. Sample drivers that you keep will be credited at full value when you order twelve similar models for production (1sample free for 12 similar items ordered).

i.e: You have paid for 2 samples of the SP 5050. You decide to order 24 other SP 5050’s. 2 items will automatically be deducted from the total amount of this order.

Our sample policy can be summed up as follows. You do not pay for a sample as long as you return it to the factory within 10 weeks or as long as you choose it for production.
